Better than I imagined, our photo shoot today went SO well. This little dude was in such great spirits and even brought his boxing gloves because he’s confident he’s going to BEAT CANCER. What a trooper. And an incredible example of God’s strength. SO many laughs today, we can’t wait to share some more of the images. For now, here’s one I shot through Instagram.

What a great kid. What an amazing family.

We were asked very last minute to do a photo shoot today for good friends of ours. They have just found out that their sweet little son has Leukemia, and they would like photos of him and with him before he looses his hair. Of course we agreed to spend the afternoon with them, to love on them, and to capture them.

Why does cancer even need to exist? My heart burdens for the children that have to go through this. I can’t even imagine what it must be like as a parent to have to walk that road. To have to ask God the hard questions. And to wonder why YOUR child has to endure such a disease. We are always honored when people ask us to step into their lives in such a way, to touch them with our art and to bring to life emotions that they themselves aren’t aware that they are expressing.

But my heart is heavy.

Jesus, I pray that these images we take today would be so deeply special to this family. And that they would have some relief from the pain, fear and burden while they are with us. That they will laugh together and for a time, forget that cancer even exists. I of course pray for ultimate healing. But mostly for your will in their lives and that of all the people this family touches. Strength. I pray for strength. And peace. And healing in his little body. How frightened his mother must be. But I know that she trusts in you, in only ways you can give her strength to do. Give us a remarkable photo shoot for this family. And surround them with your peace in their lives amidst the scary road ahead. Amen.

happy new year!

1 Jan

There were so many things that we experienced this year that we are extremely grateful for.

One of them was having our OWN family pictures taken. We had the amazing opportunity to be photographed by a fellow photographer and a friend of ours in 2011 and we haven’t had the opportunity to share some of the images here. Mike Olbinski followed us around Downtown for a couple of hours with our crazy kids and it was a total blast. One goal we have for 2012 is to get in FRONT of the camera more. Someone once told me (Jess) that in order to be a good photographer, you need to know how it feels to be on the opposite side and by MANY different styles of photographers. I thought it was very smart advice and something I really listened to. I can’t wait to have our little family photographed again.

We love how crazy and fulfilling this past year has been. And whether you’re in front of our camera or we’re in front of yours, we can’t wait to meet you or see you again. 2012 is already bound to be a fantastic year. And even if it’s not, it’s ok. We’re doing what we love and that’s what matters.

austin 2011

26 May

Ok FINALLY. Here it is! A quick glimpse into our time in Austin! We went to Austin to photograph a wedding but we also decided to turn it into a mini vaca while we were there.

But let me start by saying, the wedding we photographed was INCREDIBLE. Holy moly was it such a great time!! Jen and Steven were fabulous and their day was nothing short of amazing. It was such a special time and a huge celebration! People from ALL over the country came to Austin to watch them tie the knot. And that’s pretty special, if you ask me!

My sister Danielle was born in Austin, TX and hasn’t been back there since we moved away when she was a baby. So we brought the kids and Danielle and her husband Cameron came along to help us with them and to be able to see Austin too! It was SO FUN having them with us! If you travel with more than one kid, I definitely recommend a 2:1 ratio.

Spoiled, I know.

But it really made a huge difference having them there through all the travels. Plus, it allowed us to work and not worry about the boys but to still be able to bring them so we could be together as a family. I am SO grateful!

SO, we landed in Austin without TOO much craziness on the plane. We had one huge meltdown by Rider, but other than that the airplane ride was great! SO we landed and got settled in the place we stayed. We have some good friends who live in Austin who graciously opened up their home to us without hesitation and provided so much more than we could have asked for! They were awesome hosts and again, we were SO grateful that they allowed us to stay with them. They don’t live too far from downtown, which was OOBER convenient and made it a fabulous time for us to be able to see the city some!

After we got settled, we decided to go grab something to eat downtown. Austin’s downtown is LEGIT. Have you ever been there? Oh man. It’s a photographers dream. So many cool spots, awesome people and lots and lots and lots of character!

We ate at STUBBS. It’s famous in Austin. And we understand why. It was FABULOUS food. We wanted to eat BBQ because well, we were in Texas. Duh. (Notice the milk bottle in the top lefthand corner and the beer bottle in the top righthand corner haha!)

Cruz was very fascinated with this bike.

And then THIS GUY walked up. Please check out his shirt, specifically right above Cruz’s head. Innappropriate? Ya, I know. I HONESTLY DIDN’T NOTICE until I was uploading these pictures to this blog. I was just thinking the picture of Cruz talking to random strangers (with Jay) was super cute. I never even saw his shirt. WOW. The kicker? I’m 98% sure that this bike did not belong to this man.

The people in Austin were so friendly. At least to us. And we had fun with so many random strangers that would jump in shots or talk with us. I loved it!

Austin is a fun city.

I love this face.

Some other fun shots.

I love this picture. I love him.

This is where the bats were supposed to fly out. We literally stood there for over 30 minutes, past 8:30 pm and they hadn’t flown out. When it was just about dark, Jason noticed that they were flying away on the distant horizon. So we totally missed it and so did everyone else on the bridge. SO WEIRD. So we went back a couple nights later and we were able to watch them fly out. They didn’t leave until it was pretty much dark so we weren’t able to see them in the sky. BUT, we did see them flying out from under the bridge. And it was kinda loud and smelly!! And there literally was 1.5 MILLION bats. It was crazy.

We ONLY ate at places that were local to Austin. It’s one of my favorite things ever to try new places and one of those that we tried while we were in Austin was called Mighty Fine Burgers. OMG. YUM. If you’re in Austin it’s a ‘must-go’!

Aw. My sweet picky eater. He loved the fries though!

This is Jackson. Rachel and Tim’s little boy. We stayed at their house. Cruz and Jack were BEST FRIENDS the whole time we were there. He still asks about Jack. I wish we lived closer to them because they’d be such great little buddies.

After dinner on this night we went to a store called Whole Earth. They had some REALLY cool stuff inside and we all had fun shopping. Then we all goofed off on the hammocks that they had hanging outside their store.

He’s always picking his nose. I have more pictures of him picking his nose than I know what to do with it. How do kids learn how to do this?? I can assure you, we did not teach him this.

We did a photo shoot with The Allen’s while we were there. We had a blast walking all around downtown snapping pictures of them and of all kinds of things too! One thing is, it was FREAKIN HOT. I mean, humid HOT. I’m used to the dry heat! But it was NOT dry. And it was HOT.

We were able to snap a family picture while we were at it. I love this picture.

Some other shots of us roaming around downtown.

Other cool stuff I saw. I know this post is long. It’s almost over, I swear.

He loved checking out the planes as we left. We didn’t want to leave.

So you guys. PLEASE go check out Steven + Jen Stamps wedding. Their wedding post is up on our site and you’ve got to check it out! They got married at The Driskill Hotel and it was SUCH an amazing day and celebration!! We were so honored to have been asked to be a part of their day! And we loved traveling to another location for a wedding. With our kids.

We totally have the bug.

I can’t wait for the day when we can travel on a regular basis, nationally AND internationally. With our kids. It’s pretty rad.

We loved Austin. I would totally move there if the right opportunity arised. Humidity and all! Ok wow. This post is SO long. Thanks for reading it. And thanks for waiting for me to post it. These past several weeks have been some of the craziest of my life.

But I feel like I’m ALWAYS saying that. God keeps opening doors for us. Including us getting a few of our weddings published in a pretty well known magazine to be out later this summer. SO STOKED. I am so grateful for this job. I am so grateful that God told me to ‘wait’ for all the years that I desired to do this but never did. Because it definitely wouldn’t be what it is today if I had relied solely on MY timing. It’s rad.

Can we please travel somewhere else to shoot a wedding? I want to ASAP.

12 Oct

SOMEBODY was supposed to be having waketime and decided that he wanted to sleep almost all the way through it, no matter what I did.

THAT person will remain nameless. But while he was sleeping, I thought it would be a good time to snap a few pictures of what I happen to think is a completely adorable onesie. I got this from a good friend at my baby shower and I couldn’t wait for him to grow a little bit so he fit it! Well, the day has come! I had to snap pictures because they grow SO fast- he’ll probably only wear this a few times! Sad moment. But it’s just oh so cute, I had to share.

Oh, and look who actually decided to wake up during this impromptu photo shoot! He’s such a cool little guy, I just can’t even resist.

one highlight from my week

18 Aug

I’ve been slightly MIA this week on my blog. And it’s because I’ve really had a hard week and I feel like complete poop these days. I hate being the pregnant lady that just complains ALL THE TIME, but it is what it is. And if one more person says, “Well, at least you’re almost done!”, I might just scream. Yes, I know I’m almost done. But 3 weeks feels like an eternity when you’re uncomfortable and unless you’ve carried more than one child, I’m not sure you fully understand how I feel since I’m dealing with extreme uncomfortableness that usually only comes if you’ve been pregnant more than once.

So there it is.

It’s been a difficult week, for more reasons than one. Reasons I don’t really feel like talking about, frankly. Everything is fine, don’t worry. It’s just been a long, emotional and kind of draining week for me. So I’ve cried A LOT and tried to keep up my normal routine and getting Cruz out of the house everyday. It’s hard to get out of the house these days, but sometimes it’s harder to stay home with a toddler. So it’s worth the extra effort, even though I feel like lying down every time we go somewhere. But in the midst of this difficult week, there HAVE been some amazing highlights! It hasn’t all been bad, even though I definitely just did paint it that way.

Last night, we had a SUPER fun photo shoot planned that I’ve been looking forward to for a few weeks now! Recently, I’ve connected with Steph and Joy who are the co-founders of the Scottsdale Mom’s Blog, which is an amazing blog that connects other mom’s together from the area! I recently went to their Mom’s Night Out and they actually asked me to photograph the event! It was SUCH a blast! It was so much fun to get out with other mom’s, eat yummy food, drink wine (not me, don’t panic) and just be women for the night. Steph and Joy have such great hearts and love connecting with people and getting others connected to one another. I’ve completely enjoyed getting to know these two women and love watching their network grow and become something that is so cool for so many moms in the area!

Jason and I thought it would be so fun to do a girly shoot with these awesome women to say thanks for giving us exposure and for having the huge hearts that they have. So last night, we had the biggest pleasure of photographing these two mom’s with each of their little girls! Steph and Joy’s daughters are 6 weeks apart, and they are the CUTEST little girls ever. So we headed up towards Pinnacle Peak Patio in Scottsdale, noticing the dark clouds all around the mountains, but not really super concerned about it. We’ve only ever had to cancel one photo shoot since we’ve become photographers due to the rain- it just always clears up! But as we are heading up that way I get a text from Steph that says:

“Is it raining?”

My response:

“No I don’t think so!”

It wasn’t raining YET, where we were, so I just told her that I didn’t think the rain would be an issue and we can always shoot quickly if we need to. The sky was SUPER dark and it did look like it COULD rain, but it’s Arizona! You know how it goes if you live here. It teases us all the time! Dark clouds in the sky, and no rain for months. I know it’s monsoon season, but I just figured that it would hold out until we were finished because it always usually does. Nope. It didn’t hold out. We stepped out of the car and it was sprinkling and very windy. I didn’t really think that it would rain harder than the sprinkles, at least not until after our shoot. Not sure why I thought that. Probably because I’ve lived in Arizona all my life!

Well, it ended up raining pretty hard, cutting our shoot short. But we were able to get some awesome shots of the four of them and I can’t wait to showcase them here and on our Session Nine Photography site, once they are ready. We also brought Cruz with us, which we typically try not to do these days. But these two awesome women didn’t mind in the least and Cruz provided some pretty funny entertainment! He was such a flirt with each of their girls! And he proved (once again) to be ALL BOY and LOVED playing in the rain and puddles. He calls the rain “Weeeee!” so he just ran around shouting “Weeeee!!” and pointing at the puddles on the ground. HA! These pictures don’t do justice to how crazy his hair looked after the shoot. Between the humidity and the rain, he was a mess! A cute mess, but a mess nonetheless! And check out how RED his hair looks! HA! I did not edit this picture to make his hair look super red. But it was wet and outside in the right lighting and all his little redheaded hairs just popped right out!

We had a blast with Steph and Joy. So consider this a ‘Coming Soon’ post for the pictures from the shoot. These lady’s looked amazing and each of their girls are simply adorable. It was such a fun photo shoot and the unexpected rain (and cooler temperatures!) made this shoot unpredictable, fun and we had to get super creative. It was a little crazy, but it was such a highlight of my week that I just had to share.

So check back soon for updated pictures on these two mammas and their beautiful girls. It was such a fun shoot- we just had a blast! Thanks ladies for being so awesome! It was our pleasure to photo you 4 and we can’t wait to unveil the pictures to you!

*Steph’s on the left with her daughter Nora and Joy’s on the right with her daughter Reagan. Cuteness abounds!!

latest delivery session

25 Jun

This was one very special Delivery Session. Who am I kidding? They are ALL special and unique in their own ways! But this one is one that I’ll remember for the whole rest of my life! You might remember Jen and Rick from their maternity session that Jason and I did back in April. These two were so excited and anxiously awaiting the birth of their first son, who was due to arrive June 22nd. Well, in the wee early morning hours of June 15th, I received a phone call from Jen that her water broke!! Rick did an awesome job of keeping me updated all day long and at about 5:30 pm it was finally time for me to head down to the hospital.

When I got there both Jen and Rick were in great spirits. Jen had labored long and hard, but she was doing great! I spent some time there with them in their delivery room hanging out and waiting for this little guy to make his debut. Then, after a couple more hours of waiting the nurses and doctor decided that it would be in the best interest of mamma and baby to go ahead and perform a c-section.

Having had a c-section myself, I know all too well the process, emotions, and fears with going through this procedure. I knew it was so important to Jen and Rick to have pictures of their little guy making his grand entrance, but since they usually only let one person into the OR with the mamma, I thought I would have to sit this one out until they were in recovery.

I was wrong!!

I asked a couple of nurses and did what I could to see if there was ANY way I could slip into the OR to photograph the event for Jen and Rick. I, of course, was ready to go along with whatever the doctor said because the most important thing is keeping baby and mom safe. But since it never hurts to ask, I did what I could to see if I could photograph the c-section.

And they said YES!

To my complete shock and honor, I was allowed to scrub up and head into the OR to be apart of this precious baby’s birth via c-section! It was the first c-section I’ve ever photographed and it was the most incredible thing I’ve ever done! Hudson Lucius Lossing was born on June 15th, 2010 at 7:48 pm weighing 9.0 lbs 21 & 1/4 inches. He was such a healthy and happy little guy! Jen did fantastic and Rick was just beaming. It was such an honor to be allowed back to be apart of this miraculous day for them! It never fails to amaze me that couples ask me, allow me, and trust me enough to be involved in something so huge and personal for them.

I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of this incredible story. It was such a fabulous night! There’s nothing better than watching an amazing couple become an amazing family. This is the stuff that life’s all about! Man, what a cool night. Taking these pictures and being apart of this is something I’ll remember for a long, long time. I can only hope to photograph many more births in the future. I truly love it.
